The whole point of elections and referenda seems to be to contradict the experts. Voters have a way of changing their mind at the very last minute, as we saw during the latest election in the UK and many times before. Sometimes the result is a lot more rational than expected, at other times voters seem to delight in sanctioning outgoing politicians and making it impossible to have a viable government. They particularly enjoy sending the nutty, patently incompetent or dishonest ones to the European Parliament
