All models are wrong, just some are useful. Informed policy making with modelling and simulation based on examples from transportation and healthcare domains.

Nowadays decision making in policy setting can be an enormously complicated task. One needs to be able to foresee the consequences of decisions made, while minding costs, time and effort required. While some may prefer using poll results to guide their judgment, Paweł would like to advocate for a rigorous process employing computer models and simulations to find the best solution for complex problems. The presentation intends to give an introduction to how modelling and simulation can be used to help decision making.

The webinar is aimed as a general introduction to the topic and suitable for a wide audience. Roughly half of the presentation will be used to introduce important concepts and the other half to demonstrate several models interactively.

Contents:
1. What is modelling and simulation?
2. Why is it so powerful?
3. What can we do with it to support policy-making?
4. Main formalisms and characteristics of simulation.
5. Examples of several models from transportation and healthcare domains (e.g. traffic jam, emergency department, airport terminal, container terminal,- pandemic) – depending on the time available.
