As Others Flee to West, Most Syrian Refugees Remain in Region|NYT

We are in a situation: damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If we intervene, we have situations like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. If we don’t intervene, we have situations  like  in Rwanda and now in Syria. Not to mention half-way situations like Iraq falling apart, Libya, etc. The problem is that locals and neighbours are incapable or unwilling to sort out the situation. And when they do get involved, it’s even worse – see Iran’s involvement in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. In centuries past, we would have gone in with guns blazing, exterminating the side we did not like, taking control of what was left. Or we would simply ignore the problem, with locals slaughtering each other, until one side was defeated and exterminated. Not all wars can be solved with: “I wish we could all get along…” and we don’t have the guts (and the money) to become involved effectively and, once one side defeated, retain control of the situation, as we prefer hit and run solutions, like Bush in Afghanistan and Iraq – with the consequences we can see today. As to taking responsability for all the ills of the world, which we seem to feel inclined to do, it’s a lot cheaper to help them build livable camps in the region, that having them all trekking to Europe, as it’s destroying us in the process as well
