This magnified photograph shows an Aedes aegypti mosquito–the species capable of transmitting the Zika virus, whose primary threat is to pregnant women. The virus is linked to a spike in severe birth defects, and there’s currently no treatment because scientist long assumed the virus was so benign that it wasn’t worth the resources to investigate treatment. Research for a vaccine is now underway at the National Institutes of Health with a safety trial planned for September. Read TIME’s cover story on TIME.com. Photograph by Jamie Chung for TIME.
