Tomatoes and strawberries

The Age, Victoria, AU: Plant discovery may feed a hungry world

I am perplexed – mainly because all of the “improvements” give us healtheir, better looking produce, except for one small factor: taste. Perfect looking tomatoes which taste like potatoes or nothing at all, strawberries looking great and tasting of nothing. Between the selection of good-looking tasteless varieties, grown under plastic, often with artificial heating, force-fed chemicals, all-year round and not just in season, we get pefect, cheap, plentiful fruit and vegetables, tasting of nothing. I love progress in electronics, but when it comes to tomatoes or  strawberries I am a luddite.
