El Pais: Seguridad y libertad – protect citizens and safeguard their rights

Western governments try to obtain the means to act against terrorism. Our societies have to find solutions which give the police, intelligence and judges sufficient tools to exchange information quickly and efficiently, while safeguarding our privacy and rights – at the national, European and international levels. Agreements on rapid exchange of information and fast track extraditions, at least within Europe, are likely to protect the public, without recourse to much worse solutions like the cancellation of Schengen, advocated by extreme right wingers. The cumbersome extradition procedures between EU members are a joke: why do we allow common criminals and terrorists to move around Europe at will, while we prevent the police and judiciary to act swiftly and efficiently, within the law, to stop them and bring them to justice? With this kind of games we play, again, in the hands of the extreme right wing, which would take away many more freedoms than that of appealing forever extradition between neighbouring European countries, with similar judicial safeguards and legislations.
